It’s hard to believe it has been almost 12 months since we last gathered for the Barrie Film Festival! BFF19 is just around the corner and it promises to be another incredible 10 days of film and events. One of the most eagerly anticipated is our Short Film Competition and Showcase.

It’s an honour and privilege for me to again Chair this year’s Short Film Showcase, an annual celebration of films from both home and abroad that challenge filmmakers to produce a fully developed picture with a running time of just ten minutes.

It’s always a remarkable experience to see the innovative and unique ways directors and writers capture our imagination within such a short amount of time. It’s a skill few can master.

And like the Barrie Film Festival itself, the Short Film Showcase is growing; last year our entries totalled over 800, and this year we will surpass 1000 entries to pick from.

Yet what’s most exciting for us is to see the evolution of talent in our own backyard… year after year we are seeing returning filmmakers from high schools throughout Simcoe County submitting films that are successively stronger than their previous entries. The recent addition of a full time digital video course at Georgian College, to compliment the media/film studies classes offered at area high schools ensure that we are developing an impressive stable of local film talent.

In fact, an entry to our 2014 Showcase, a film called Defective, has been picked up for release as a full length feature in 2017!

Film is an important medium. It represents a cultural touchstone and a shared experience that can transcend nations, class, and language, and can serve as a tool to champion positive social change or inspire meaningful dialogue about vital issues. It’s why we all keep going to the movies.

I can’t wait to see what this year’s Short Film Showcase has in store for us… and I invite you to join us!
